| Background:
The Laurel campus sits on approximately 6.5 acres in Atherton and serves approximately 520 students, kindergarten through second grade.
The Laurel campus houses 15 permanent classrooms in pod configurations and 14 lleased or owned portables scattered over the field areas. The classroom pods were originally built in 1959 with three classrooms and a central core area. Over the years, additional classrooms were added to make three five-classroom pods. The latest classrooms were added in 1996/1997. The last modernization work included improvements to the Library, Administration Area, site improvements, classroom upgrades (HVAC, power, data, paint, new casework, lighting, and flooring). Window replacements and complete door/hardware package were not included in the work.

Project Overview:
Numerous temporary portables were originally placed on campus to accommodate the 1995 Bond Program modernization projects and, along with temporary asphalt walkways, restrooms and utility connections have remained since the District implemented the Class Size Reduction Program as the modernization and construction projects were being completed. Additional portables have been placed in recent years to accommodate the increased enrollment. Two portables owned by the District also sit on concrete foundations, used primarily for storage and custodial offices, but have been renovated and used as music and art classrooms.
The District has evaluated the site acreage, capacity restraints, current configuration, Community input and other considerations and options, including converting the campus to a K-5 facility, which would have added additional classrooms and enlarged the Multi-Use Building on a very small site and has decided to endeavor to reduce and limit student enrollment to under 400 student (K-3). Design capacity with District's student to teacher ratios will be at 400 students. The campus will have 20 regular classrooms.
Building considerations include adding a preschool to the campus and adding a 5-classroom, single story building to accommodate 3rd grade and eliminate the existing deteriorated and leased portables. Current planning also includes new science, music and art classrooms and a mini-multipurpose (flex-space) building that will include a new conforming kitchen, as well as staff and student restroom facilities. Considerations for site upgrades include additional covered eating area, other courtyard and landscape enhancements, covered walkways, renovated playfields and hardcourts, new and relocated play equipment. Planned modernization scope includes, further upgrades to existing classrooms and facilities, including campus wide fire, life safety and ADA improvements.
The District, working with the Site Design Committee, developed preliminary site plans and presented its work to the Board of Education and the public during the March 13, 2007 Board meeting. After review and comments, the Board approved the preliminary site plan during their April 4, 2007 Board meeting.
Pre-School/Occupational Therapy and Parking Lot Improvements:
The scope of these improvements includes the construction of a new 2400SF modular facility to serve special need students from the age of 3 years old and to serve K-5 students who have occupational therapy needs. The facility will also include office space, small instructional spaces, and conference room. A small play area will also be located for the new pre-school/OT building. The new structure will be located at the front of the school next to the current playground where the basketball area is located. In order to accommodate the new facility, the parking lot front area will receive improvements.
